The Anatomy of a Handbound Journal. A notebook brought to life through uncompromising materials and meticulous hand-sewing. Introducing: Indigo Blue Book. Designed to age with character, becoming a lifelong companion that evolves alongside your journey.
1. The Cover: Heavyweight Domestic Denim
The exterior is wrapped in one-wash, 10oz Japanese domestic denim—a thick, rugged fabric measuring several millimeters across. Using heavy-gauge denim for book covers is notoriously difficult. It resists adhesion, warps easily under tension, and creates massive headaches around the corners. It is, by all traditional standards, a nightmare material for bookbinding—which is precisely why we use it.
2. The Interior: OK Fools Paper
Inside lies OK Fools paper, a legendary, high-grade writing paper engineered for an exceptional fountain-slip experience. Hold a sheet to the light, and you’ll find the watermark reading “OK SUPERFINE.” My personal translation: “It’s okay. You’re doing great.” It’s a notebook designed to quietly encourage you. Use it long enough to whisper, “You’re doing great too,” and you’ll find a mutual rhythm with the page.
3. The Stitch: Sun-Dried Linen Thread
The signatures are anchored using vibrant, sun-dried linen threads. After testing every available thread on the market, this is where we landed. Though primarily manufactured for leathercraft, this natural flax thread forms an incredible synergy with traditional bookbinding. It delivers striking color saturation and heavy-duty tensile strength. Pre-waxed to a fine working tolerance (with a touch more added by hand), it offers an exceptionally smooth stitching flow. While tucked away and virtually invisible during normal use, a wide-open spread occasionally flashes a glimpse of the binding thread. While most notebooks stick to neutral, unbleached beige, we bring in sharp pops of indigo blue, crimson red, and bright yellow.
4. Details: Grosgrain Ribbons & Color Harmony
For the bookmark, we use high-chroma, high-tensile grosgrain ribbons that won’t fray, even when left raw-cut. We cut them intentionally long, leaving the final trim entirely up to you. The headbands, ribbon, and binding thread are meticulously color-matched to form a unified aesthetic.
5. The Maker’s Philosophy
High quality is a given, but above all, the materials must make the binding process genuinely enjoyable. When the maker loves the materials, every step of the craft translates into the final piece. Every single component—even those unmentioned here—is chosen because it brings genuine joy to the hands that build it.
